Real Men Drink Water!

It hit me around the third time my son told me he respected me because-in his words- "in my entire life I've never seen you drunk Dad." That's when I realized what a fraud I was. The truth is I was constantly drunk in front of him. Drunk while driving him around, putting him to bed, you name it. I was just good at not appearing drunk.

In praying about it, it became apparent that I had a choice: continue to be a boy, sneaking around, finding ways to drink and hoping not to get caught. Giving in to my weakness for whatever reason I could come up with, or to finally stand up and be the man God intended me to be. That is the bottom line with alcoholism or any kind of addiction: are you a boy or a man?

Science tells us alcoholism is a disease and that is true. But as Christian men, God commissions us to be His warriors for justice and peace. That, my brothers, can only be accomplished by men. So I ask you: Are you a helpless boy, waiting around to be devoured by the darkness? Or are you a man? Are you willing to put aside your weakness and take your place as a warrior, standing in the light, finally useful to God and His plan? It's not easy, nothing larger than you is, but it's worth the respect of our children and the approval of God.
